I would love to travel into my subconscious mind and erase a lot of stuff. It’s said that we only use 10-15% of our brain capacity. In a way, that’s true. The fact is that we use 100% of our brain but only 10-15% of it is done consciously. You know what that means? My subconscious mind is the boss of me!
I don’t like that, not one bit. In all respects, I want to decide for myself or, at the very least, choose to involve God to help me. No way do I want my subconscious leading me around by the nose; I want no part of it.
Have you ever made a stupid decision? Though well thought out and planned, you made a move that would affect you for the rest of your life, or perhaps a move that would affect someone else’s life, only to find later that it was a bonehead move? In those retrospective moments, I’ve asked myself about those decisions and wondered if my brain was at all involved in the process.
The Bible talks about being careful concerning what we let into the spheres of our senses and our hearts. God knows that our bodies and souls do not serve our spirits. Our spirit is the very connection to God that longs to always do, say, think, and feel, what is in line with His precepts and commands. But the subconscious is a mind into serving itself. It is often lured through the senses and past experience.
In his book, Roll Away Your Stone, Dutch Sheets writes about his experience walking through the streets of Kowloon, Hong Kong. He came across a tattoo shop and was struck by one particular example of a tattoo in the window, “born to lose.” Astonished, he entered the shop and asked the artist if anyone ever actually had that tattooed on their body. The artist answered yes. Sheets replied, “I just can’t believe anyone in their right mind would have that terrible phrase tattooed on his body!” The artist tapped his forehead and answered, “Before tattoo on body, tattoo on mind.”
Our right mind is what responds to our desires to be fully connected and obedient to God. Our right mind wants to serve our spirit – the spirit that serves God. The subconscious mind is a landmine, a stronghold, a place that often bosses us around without our permission or knowledge. Knowledge is power.
What’s on your mind?
